The Ruby Lake Lagoon Society on the Sunshine Coast is well known for its successful wetland research and environmental education efforts, which include the building of the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre and Nature Reserve, and the running of a nature school program.
In 2018 the Gencon Foundation is supporting the Ruby Lake Lagoon Society in its new project - a research and educational marine centre called the Pender Ocean Discovery Station, or PODS. The centre will provide opportunities for studying marine biodiversity and educating the public about the importance of marine life.
This project will include:
An interactive subterranean aquarium
A wet lab classroom with touch tanks
An outdoor children’s amphitheatre classroom
Marine research laboratories for local high schools as well as regional university professors and students
